This is one special and unique Kever Rachel painting. The colours in the background are specifically the colours of the jewels of Rachel's two sons, Joseph and Benjamin, which were displayed in the Choshen Mishpat, (the breast-plate worn by the Cohen Gadol, the high priest) in the times of the temple, the Beit Hamikdash. Each of the twelve tribes had a jewel which corresponds to their tribe.
The Torah names the stone associated with the tribe of Yosef as the Shoham -שוהם stone. Some opinions say this is is an emerald, which is green, and some say this is the onyx stone which is black in colour. To satisfy both options I included both strokes of bright green and streaks of black. The stone associated with the tribe of Benjamin is the ישפה- Yashpe stone. This is the Jasper stone, and is a multi colored stone, usually the colours red, green and black, again these colours were included in the painting. And what’s even more fascinating is that the Talmud discusses the verse in Isaiah 54:12 which says that the walls of Jerusalem will be rebuilt with ‘kadkod’ which the Talmud records can refer to both the Shoham stone, and the Yashpe stone.
What a beautiful and deeply signifcant painting to have in your home!
